Application
Switch stack, server to switch

The TP-Link SM5220-1M direct attach cable is a ready-made solution with integrated SFP+ connectors: it replaces a pair of optical modules and a patch cord when the devices sit side by side in one rack. 10 Gbit/s at lower cost and with none of the power draw of optics.

Advantages

  • Cheaper than a pair of optical modules with a patch cord at the same speed
  • No optics — fewer points of failure and no connector cleaning
  • No extra power consumption, unlike transceivers
  • 10 Gbit/s for switch stacking and server connections
  • A finished assembly: nothing to select or mate

Applications

  • Stacking switches in one rack
  • Connecting servers to an access switch
  • Linking storage systems to the network core
  • Video analytics nodes in the server room

Frequently asked questions

Can this cable connect equipment in different racks?
A meter only reaches within one rack. For adjacent racks there is a 3-meter version.
Is the cable compatible with switches of other brands?
Usually yes, but some manufacturers restrict compatibility in firmware. Tell us the model and we will check.
How is DAC worse than optics?
It is only rated for short distances and is stiffer to route. From a few meters onwards you go back to optics.
