The TP-Link SM321A-2 SFP module works with WDM technology: transmit and receive run over a single fiber on different wavelengths. That halves the fiber used in the cable — important when the installed line is already occupied or few fibers are available. The A-side module is paired with a B side, with a range of up to 2 kilometers.

Frequently asked questions

Why are different A and B sides needed?
The modules work on opposing wavelengths: the A side transmits on 1310 and receives on 1550, the B side the other way round. A pair of two identical modules will not work.
What if there are enough fibers for both directions?
Then ordinary two-fiber modules are simpler and cheaper. WDM wins precisely when fibers are scarce.
Can modules from different manufacturers be paired?
Technically possible when wavelengths and speed match, but a pair from one manufacturer is more reliable.
