GPON in plain words

GPON is passive optical network technology: from the head-end (OLT) a single fibre branches through splitters to dozens of subscribers, each with an ONU terminal. "Passive" means no active equipment between the station and the subscriber — only fibre and unpowered splitters.

Hence the key benefits: up to 20 km reach, no switches in stairwells and no power for them, gigabit speeds. EPON and XPON are sibling flavours: XPON terminals work with both head-end types.

Who needs a PON network

The classic case is an ISP in a district, settlement or residential complex: one fibre serves 64–128 flats instead of a chain of switches. The second audience is enterprises: remote workshops, warehouses and checkpoints connect to the server room with no active nodes across the site.

The third use is CCTV over fibre: cameras at distant points — car park, perimeter, a neighbouring building — connect through inexpensive ONUs with no quality loss over distance.

What the network consists of: OLT, splitters, ONU

The OLT sits in the server room — 4 to 16 PON ports, each serving up to 64–128 subscribers. Then passive 1:8–1:64 splitters in boxes, optical cable and subscriber ONUs — basic or with a Wi-Fi router.

What it costs

A subscriber ONU starts from a few hundred thousand UZS, a 4–8 port OLT from a few million. The full network budget adds cable, splitters, boxes, splicing and configuration.
