GPON: How a Passive Optical Network Works and What It Costs

GPON is passive optical network technology: from the head-end (OLT) a single fibre branches through splitters to dozens of subscribers, each with an ONU terminal. "Passive" means no active equipment between the station and the subscriber — only fibre and unpowered splitters.

Hence the key benefits: up to 20 km reach, no switches in stairwells and no power for them, gigabit speeds. EPON and XPON are sibling flavours: XPON terminals work with both head-end types.

The classic case is an ISP in a district, settlement or residential complex: one fibre serves 64–128 flats instead of a chain of switches. The second audience is enterprises: remote workshops, warehouses and checkpoints connect to the server room with no active nodes across the site.

The third use is CCTV over fibre: cameras at distant points — car park, perimeter, a neighbouring building — connect through inexpensive ONUs with no quality loss over distance.

The OLT sits in the server room — 4 to 16 PON ports, each serving up to 64–128 subscribers. Then passive 1:8–1:64 splitters in boxes, optical cable and subscriber ONUs — basic or with a Wi-Fi router.

A subscriber ONU starts from a few hundred thousand UZS, a 4–8 port OLT from a few million. The full network budget adds cable, splitters, boxes, splicing and configuration.

Copper Ethernet is capped at a hundred meters to the switch — in a residential complex or settlement that means active nodes in every entrance: cabinets, power, maintenance. GPON covers up to 20 kilometers with passive optics: between the station and the subscriber there are only fiber and splitters, which need neither electricity nor cooling.

That is why at hundreds of subscribers PON wins on cost of ownership: less active hardware means fewer failure points and power bills. Ethernet remains the pick inside a building and where every subscriber needs a guaranteed symmetric channel — say, an office center with corporate tenants. The combo is often optimal: GPON to the building, Ethernet inside.
