Electromagnetic and electromechanical locks solve the same task differently, and confusing them costs money. An electromagnetic lock holds the door by magnetic force while powered: it has no moving parts, barely wears, and opens when power fails — which is why it goes on evacuation routes. An electromechanical lock works with a bolt, like a motorised conventional lock, and stays locked during an outage — important for entrance doors and rooms with valuables; it can also be opened with a key.

Holding force is matched to the door: 150–180 kg is enough for a light interior door, while an entrance group or a glass door takes 300–500 kg and up. A lock always needs its kit: a closer, an exit button, a power supply with a backup battery, and a door contact to confirm the door is actually shut. A separate requirement is fire release: the lock must open on a signal from the fire alarm — designed in from the start, not patched on later.

A lock is part of an access control system, not a standalone purchase, and quoting it apart from the door makes no sense: a warped leaf or worn hinges will defeat any holding force, so the survey starts with the door itself. We quote the complete kit: the lock, closer, power, reader and controller, installation and rights setup. The price depends on the lock type, holding force, and whether an access system already exists to connect the door to.

The scenario defines the choice better than the budget. An apartment or house suits a smart lock with a fingerprint and an app: no keys, temporary guest codes, a notification on every opening. An office needs the lock as part of access control — with staff cards, an entry log and time-based rights. A hotel or serviced apartments — a card system tied to check-in: the card lives until the check-out date. For gates and street doors, protected models resistant to dust, moisture and temperature swings are the pick.

An electronic lock lives longer than it seems: quality models are rated for hundreds of thousands of cycles, and the weak spot is usually not the mechanics but power and installation. So we always include a backup battery in the kit and configure smart locks to warn about low batteries in advance.
