The server room is the heart of a company's IT infrastructure: servers, switches, the video archive and telephony live here, and any failure in this room stops every department at once. A server room starts with the right space. Not a corner of the accounting office and not a storeroom with heating pipes above the rack: the room is chosen with no plumbing overhead, floor load margin, and service clearance in front of and behind the cabinets. We often arrive at sites where the server has spent years under an archive shelf — and our first deliverable is a migration plan that does not stop services.

Power is the main source of downtime, so we calculate it first. A dedicated feed and panel for the server room, a UPS with margin in both capacity and runtime, and for higher demands a second feed and a diesel generator. A correct scheme answers "how many minutes do we survive a grid failure" with a number, not a hope: a typical office server room needs 15–30 minutes for a clean shutdown, a data center is sized for hours.

Cooling is the most underestimated part. A rack of servers dissipates as much heat as several space heaters, and a household wall split cannot cope — it is not built for round-the-clock winter operation. We install precision units or paired inverter conditioners with rotation and standby, organise cold and hot aisle airflow, and wire temperature and leak sensors into monitoring with alerts.

Fire safety in a server room is its own discipline: water and powder destroy equipment more surely than fire does. We design gas suppression that extinguishes a fire without a trace on the hardware, add early smoke detection and ventilation shutdown. Room access is closed with logged access control: who entered the racks and when is a question an IT director must be able to answer.

Inside the room — order that saves hours in every incident: racks with cable management, labeling on every line, cable journals, an equipment layout diagram. We hand over as-built documentation that lets a new administrator or contractor understand the estate without excavation. Climate, power and door monitoring goes to the duty engineer's phone.
