A Barrier with Plate Recognition: How It Works

The scheme is simple: an ANPR camera reads the plate of the approaching car, the controller checks it against the lists, and if the plate is whitelisted, the barrier opens — the driver passes without opening a window or reaching for a remote. The passage is logged with a snapshot: who, when, in which car.

Remotes and fobs do not disappear — they remain the backup for a dirty plate or a guest car. But the main flow goes "by plate", and the entrance queue vanishes: cars simply do not stop.

A minimal entrance: a barrier with an intensive-duty drive, an ANPR camera, a controller with the lists, photocells and a loop detector — so the boom never drops onto a car. For a residential courtyard that is enough. The kit then grows by task: a call panel for guests, a traffic light on a narrow lane, a second camera on the exit if the log must see both directions.

The barrier is chosen by lane width and duty: a residential complex or business center needs a drive rated for thousands of cycles a day and for frost and heat. A domestic model at an intensive entrance lives one season — the most common false economy.

The whitelist opens the barrier for residents automatically. Residential complexes get per-apartment car limits and guest hours; business centers get tenant zones; factories get delivery truck windows. A guest enters by a call to the guard, a one-time request from the app, or a QR code.

The blacklist works in reverse: an unwanted car does not pass and the guard is notified. Paid parking adds tariffs: the entry time is fixed, and a debtor does not leave until payment — a self-service pay station or QR payment closes the matter without a cashier.

A camera with an honest 99 % recognition rate easily becomes 80 % through poor installation: too sharp an angle to the lane, oncoming headlights, a plate blocked by the next car. We mount the camera at the right angle and height, with IR for the night — and test on real traffic, dirty and transit plates included.

Hikvision and Dahua kits from Tashkent stock, entrance installation in one or two days, list setup and guard training: you will add and remove plates yourself. Warranty on equipment and works; the survey and quote are free.

An automatic entrance stays vulnerable to power cuts: without a UPS the boom freezes in the closed position and the yard is blocked. A UPS for the controller and the drive, plus a mechanical key release, solve this for a few per cent of the project budget.

Dust settles on the lens and degrades recognition long before obvious errors appear, so wiping the glass is written into a monthly service routine. In winter, heating for the camera housing and a check of the drive gearbox grease are worth doing.
