A barrier gate for a yard or car park: types, automation and what a fair quote includes

The key parameters are boom length and duty cycle. A 3–4 m yard entrance is fine with a base drive at 50 % duty — a few hundred cycles a day. A business centre or mall needs an intensive drive (70–100 %) built for thousands of cycles, or the gearbox will not outlive the warranty.

Booms come round, rectangular and LED-lit; long openings take folding booms. In cold climates check for cabinet heating — budget drives freeze in winter.

Remotes are the base option: cheap, but they get lost and passed around. A phone call is better: a resident's number in the whitelist, a free call — the barrier opens. The top of convenience is plate recognition (ANPR): registered cars pass without stopping, guests are let in by the guard, every pass is logged with a photo.

ANPR pays off from about 50 cars: entrance queues disappear along with the who-opened-it disputes. Access-control integration adds one journal for gates and doors alike.

An honest quote covers the drive with the boom, the foundation, an induction loop or safety photocells, the control unit and your chosen access method. On an unstable grid add a small UPS — a dead barrier blocks the whole yard.

Proper installation is half the lifespan: a foundation or embed under the cabinet, photocells and a loop detector so the boom never drops onto a car, earthing and neat power routing. For a yard with constant flow take an intensive drive: a domestic one at thousands of cycles a day lasts one season.

In winter the barrier sits its exam: a soft start keeps it from tearing a frozen boom, and seasonal grease preserves the mechanics. We configure winter modes at installation; after that a barrier needs seasonal lubrication, adjustments and fresh batteries in remotes and photocells.

Without photocells or an induction loop the boom will drop onto a moving car. Photocells go on both sides of the lane at a height of 50–60 cm, and the loop is set into the asphalt before the top layer is laid — redoing it later costs more than the barrier itself.

Check the behaviour during a power cut as well: most models release the boom manually with a key, but the mechanism has to be reachable from outside. Reflective strips and a warning lamp are mandatory wherever the lane is used at night.
