CCTV Without Internet: Cottage, Warehouse, Construction Site

A common myth says cameras stop working without internet. In reality, internet is only needed for remote viewing — recording itself happens locally, to a memory card or a recorder. A system on a site with no connectivity keeps a full archive that can be reviewed on the spot.

The real question is usually different: you want to check your cottage or warehouse from your phone. There are three ways to do that.

The most versatile setup: install a router with a SIM card and connect regular IP cameras and a recorder to it. Mobile internet is enough — 2–5 Mbps covers live viewing, and push notifications consume almost nothing.

Its main advantage is scalability: one camera or eight, and any models from the catalog. A plan with 10–20 GB per month covers regular viewing.

4G cameras with a SIM slot need no router at all: insert the card and the camera is online. It pays off on one or two spots: a cottage gate, a driveway entrance, a construction site.

The downside is that every camera needs its own SIM and data plan, so with 3+ cameras the router setup becomes more economical.

Where there is no electricity either, kits combining a camera, a battery and a solar panel do the job. The camera wakes up on motion detection, records a clip and sends it over 4G. In power-saving mode such a kit lasts up to a week without sun.

This is the solution for remote sites: fields, site cabins, construction perimeters — anywhere running a cable costs more than installing a self-contained unit.

Check cellular coverage at the site in advance — everything depends on it. On metal hangars and in low-lying areas the router antenna is sometimes mounted outside. For recording, use motion detection — it cuts both data traffic and memory card usage many times over.

And do not skimp on surge protection: without it, long cable runs in open areas burn out in the very first thunderstorm season.

The most affordable option is a 4G router with regular cameras: the standard system estimate gains a router, an antenna and a SIM with a data plan. Cameras with a built-in SIM cost roughly one and a half to two times more but need no router at all — worthwhile for one or two points. An autonomous kit with a solar panel and battery is the priciest and is chosen where there is no electricity either.
