The intercom does not work or does not ring: causes and fixes

Typical intercom failures explained: a silent handset, one-way audio, the door not releasing, no picture, an IP intercom that never rings the phone. What to check yourself and when to call a technician.

The handset is completely silent

If calling the apartment gets no reaction at all, start with the simplest: the handset is off the hook or the hook switch is stuck. Next down the chain: the handset cord frays where it enters the body — daily lifting wears it first, and a break inside the insulation is invisible to the eye.

When the whole building is silent, the problem is not in your apartment but in the system's power supply or switching unit — the service company's territory. The test is simple: if the neighbors' intercoms are dead too, call the operator instead of dismantling your handset.

There is sound, but only one way

One-way audio is almost always the handset itself: the speaker or the microphone. The visitor hears you but you hear nothing — suspect the speaker; the reverse — the microphone. Replacing the handset settles it faster than repair: soldering a burnt microphone costs more than a new handset.

The second cause is the volume slider that many handsets carry on the side or bottom: it gets nudged to zero during cleaning. Trivial, but start there — and check the plugs are seated firmly if the handset is modular.

The door does not release from the handset

If the conversation works but the open button does not, check in order: the button in the handset (it wears out from presses), then the lock. A tired magnetic lock 'holds weaker' — the door opens with a jerk; an electromechanical one clicks but does not pull the latch because the door sagged or the mechanism wore out.

A frequent culprit is the door closer: the door does not press home, the lock never reaches its working position, and the electronics are innocent. Check whether the door fully closes by itself — adjusting the closer resolves half of all 'broken lock' calls.

Video intercom: no picture or interference

A black screen with working audio points to the station camera's power or the video core of the cable. Ripple, stripes and a 'floating' image are classic induced noise: the video signal runs next to a power cable or is joined with twisted splices. The cure is redone connections and separated runs; stubborn cases take shielded cable.

If the picture disappears only at night, look at the station's IR LEDs: they burn out and the camera goes blind in the dark. A 'milky' image in daytime is usually just a dirty or scratched panel window: start with a wipe before blaming electronics.

IP intercom: no call on the phone

IP intercoms fail in their own way: everything works locally, but the smartphone never rings. Nine times out of ten the culprit is Android battery saving putting the app to sleep — exclude it from optimization and allow background work. The rest is the network: the station dropped off Wi-Fi after a router or password change.

We covered phone call setup, ringing order and access rights in detail in the separate article on the Hikvision IP intercom and Hik-Connect — if that is your case, start there.

When to repair and when to replace

Point repairs make sense: the handset, the button, the power supply, the closer. Replacing the system pays when failures become regular, spares for the model are gone, or you want modern features — video, calls to the phone, keys in the smartphone. Upgrades cost less than people expect: the cabling stays, the station and handsets change.

SAT Solutions installs and upgrades intercom systems: we audit the site, select a door station, monitors and a lock that fit the existing wiring, and hand the system over with a warranty on the equipment we supply. After that we maintain under contract the systems we installed ourselves. We reply to requests within the working day.

FAQ

The intercom crackles and rasps — what is it?

Most often a worn handset cord or oxidized contacts: the signal 'rustles' at the break. Less often, a speaker with a torn membrane. Both are cured by replacement — the cord and the handset cost little.

Can I replace the apartment handset myself?

Technically it is two terminals, with a catch: coordinate systems care about polarity, digital ones about the apartment number jumpers. Get it wrong and the ring or the door release disappears. If unsure, leave the swap to the building electrician or the managing organisation.

Who is responsible for the entrance intercom?

The shared building system is the responsibility of the managing organisation, and entrance faults go to them. SAT Solutions works with intercoms on its own projects: installation and upgrades in a private house, an office or a new entrance, and maintenance for the systems we installed ourselves. We reply to requests within the working day.
