What low-voltage systems are

Low-voltage (or low-current) systems are those that operate at small currents: they carry information rather than power equipment. In a modern building this covers video surveillance, access control, fire and intruder alarms, structured cabling networks, Wi-Fi, telephony, intercoms and public address.

Formally, the term covers circuits up to 24–48 V — but in practice "low-voltage" means the entire set of security and communication systems in a building.

What a typical project includes

An office or building usually gets: SCS (network outlets and cabling to the server room), CCTV around the perimeter and in key areas, access control at entrances plus turnstiles, a fire alarm with voice evacuation (mandatory by code), an intruder alarm and Wi-Fi.

Business centers and industrial sites add video-conference meeting rooms, IP telephony, control-room video walls and parking systems.

Why they must be designed together

All low-voltage systems share the same infrastructure: cable routes, trays, the server room, power and switches. Designed separately, they duplicate routes and equipment — wasted money and chaos above the suspended ceiling.

A unified design saves up to a third of the budget: one server rack, shared cable trays, a single contractor and a schedule coordinated with the fit-out.

Stages: from design to handover

The sequence is: site survey and requirements brief → design with route plans and a bill of materials → cable installation during the rough fit-out stage → equipment installation after finishing → commissioning and staff training.

The key point is to run the cables before the finishing work: installing them over a completed interior costs more and leaves surface trunking on the walls.

Codes and licenses

Fire alarm and evacuation systems are designed to fire-safety codes and require a licensed contractor — otherwise the site will fail inspection. Access control on escape routes must unlock on a fire signal, which is also a matter of proper design.

What low-current systems cost

In a construction budget, low-voltage systems usually take 3–7% — far less than finishing, yet they decide whether the building works: communications, security, access control. Can low-voltage systems be installed after renovation?

Yes, but it costs more and is more visible: cables run in surface trunking along the walls, or parts of the finish have to be removed. The right way is to lay the routes during the rough construction stage.

Which systems are required by law?

A fire alarm and an evacuation notification system are mandatory for commercial and public buildings. All other systems depend on the owner's needs.

How long does low-voltage installation take for an office?

A typical 200–500 m² office: cable routes take one to two weeks at the rough stage, then equipment installation and commissioning take another one to two weeks after finishing.
