Choosing an extinguisher starts with the fire class. Powder units are the universal choice: solids (A), liquids (B), gases (C) and live electrics up to 1000 V — the standard for offices, shops, warehouses and vehicles. CO2 units extinguish without residue: the gas evaporates without harming equipment, which makes them right for server rooms, switchboards and premises with expensive electronics. Sizing is simple: at least one 4–5 kg powder unit per 50–100 m², and no fewer than two per floor. An extinguisher lives by a schedule: powder units are recharged every 5 years, CO2 units pass an annual weight check, and any discharged unit is refilled immediately. Placement decides whether the extinguisher gets there in time: a visible spot by the exit, mounted no higher than 1.5 meters, and in winter — not in the frost, where powder cakes and the cylinder loses pressure. In a car the bracket matters more than the volume: an OP-2 within reach beats an OP-5 at the bottom of the trunk — a fire counts in seconds. Three mistakes we see constantly: one token extinguisher for a whole floor, an expired recharge with a worn-off seal, and a powder unit by the server room, where a discharge destroys the equipment more surely than fire.
