Fire classes decide everything
The letters on the cylinder are not decoration. A — solids (wood, paper, fabric), B — liquids (petrol, oils, solvents), C — gases, E — live electrical equipment. A powder extinguisher covers A, B, C and electrics up to 1000 V — which is why it became the default for offices, shops, warehouses and cars.
A CO2 unit handles B, C and E, but its superpower is different: the gas evaporates leaving neither powder nor foam. A powder discharge in a server room means cleaning every board and often writing off equipment; CO2 simply evaporates. The rule is simple: where the electronics are expensive, go CO2.
Counting units by code
The room guideline: at least one 4–5 kg powder unit per 50–100 m² and no fewer than two extinguishers per floor. Production areas and warehouses with combustibles demand more — 10 and 25 kg units, and wheeled 50–100 kg units for large floors.
Add placement to the maths: an extinguisher hangs in plain sight near the exit, no higher than 1.5 m, and never in frost (powder cakes, cylinders lose pressure). Near server and switchboard rooms — a CO2 unit on top of the powder ones. Fire cabinets, signage and a logbook complete the set — without them an inspection finds faults even with healthy extinguishers.

Where to mount and how to store
An extinguisher is mounted in plain sight near the exit, with the handle no higher than 1.5 m and clear access to it. In a vehicle or a warehouse the cylinder should not sit in the sun: inside a closed space a Tashkent summer reaches +60 °C and the powder cakes.
Pressure on the gauge, the seal and the hose are checked once a quarter. Powder units benefit from having the charge loosened, and the body kept dry: dust and moisture speed up corrosion.

Which extinguisher belongs in a car?
A 2–4 kg powder unit (5 kg and up for trucks and buses). What matters is mounting it in the cabin, not deep in the boot: a fire gives you seconds.
What should hang near a server room?
A CO2 OU-5: it fights live electrical fires and leaves no residue on equipment. A powder unit nearby is fine too — for the other rooms.
An extinguisher expired — recharge or replace?
Recharging works repeatedly as long as the cylinder passes certification. Recharge is usually cheaper; buy new when the body is damaged or the passport is lost.
How many units does a 200 m² office need to pass inspection?
