S+AO0005 is a 5-meter active optical SFP+ cable: two transceivers joined by fiber, supplied as a single finished item.

Its advantage over a pair of separate modules and a patch cord is that the link is already assembled and factory-tested. There is no need to match compatible transceivers, clean connectors or work out why the link will not come up.

Five meters is the working length inside a rack or between neighboring racks: switch to server, switch to storage. Speed is 10 Gbps and power draw is lower than that of two ordinary modules.

How does AOC differ from a DAC cable?

By the medium: AOC carries the signal over fiber, so five meters and beyond come easily, and the cable is thinner and more flexible than copper DAC — easier to dress in a dense rack.

When to choose AOC over transceivers with a patch cord?

Within a rack and between neighbors: the ready assembly is cheaper than a pair of transceivers with optics, and it has no dirty connectors — the ends are factory-sealed.

What is it compatible with?
